Rugged Tablets

Tablets built to be dropped, rained on, left in a hot cab and run with gloves. Crews that keep breaking consumer tablets in cases end up on this page. Explore rugged tablets made for utility, public works, public safety and fleet work: sealed against dust and water, tested for drops and vibration, with screens that read in sunlight and batteries that run a full shift.

Paygasus carries Panasonic Toughbook, Samsung Galaxy Tab Active, and more.

Every tablet ships new through authorized channels with the manufacturer warranty intact. Each product page lists the ratings that model carries, and the buyer chooses the operating system, storage, cellular option and dock before ordering.

Fully Rugged, Semi-Rugged and Business Rugged

Rugged is a range, not a switch. Manufacturers build to three grades, and the grade decides what the tablet survives, what it weighs and what it costs. Matching the grade to the crew is the first decision, before screen size or operating system.

GradeBuilt ForWhat It Means
Fully ruggedOutdoor crews, line work, public safety, construction, anything carried in weather and dropped on concreteSealed case, MIL-STD-810 drop and vibration testing, IP65 or better, widest operating temperature range, heaviest and highest cost per unit, fewest replacements over a 3 to 5 year run
Semi-ruggedCab-mounted use, inspectors, supervisors who go from truck to siteReinforced case and bonded screen, drop tested at lower heights, usually IP5x, lighter and less costly, suits a device that lives in a dock most of the day
Business ruggedFacilities, depots, counters and light field useA commercial tablet hardened at the factory with a tougher screen and ports, often sold with a case, the lowest cost and the shortest life in rough handling

Reading the Ratings: MIL-STD-810 and IP Codes

Two badges show up on every rugged tablet listing. They answer different questions.

MIL-STD-810H is a set of test methods, not a single pass or fail. A manufacturer chooses which methods to run, such as transit drop, vibration, high and low temperature, humidity, altitude and sand and dust, and reports the results. Two tablets with the same badge can have passed different tests, so the methods listed on the product page matter more than the badge. The testing is done by or for the manufacturer rather than by an outside certifier.

IP codes rate ingress protection with two digits: the first for solids (dust), the second for water. A 6 in the first position means dust-tight. The second digit is where field tablets separate.

RatingWater ProtectionFits
IP65Low-pressure water jets from any direction: rain, splash, hosing downMost outdoor crews and vehicle use
IP67Immersion to 1 meter for 30 minutesTablets that get dropped in standing water, marine and wet-site work
IP68Immersion beyond 1 meter, depth and time set by the manufacturerThe wettest jobs; check the depth stated per model

Screens Built for Sunlight, Gloves and Rain

A field tablet is only as good as the screen the crew can read at noon. The listing numbers that matter:

  • ✔ Brightness in nits. Consumer tablets sit near 400 to 500. Outdoor-rated screens run 800 to 1,000 and above, which is what keeps a dashboard-mounted tablet readable in July.
  • ✔ Glove touch and wet touch. Rugged models carry touch modes that register a gloved finger and ignore rain on the glass.
  • ✔ Digitizer pen. Signatures, markups and drawings on a job site need an active pen, usually tethered to the unit.
  • ✔ Anti-glare and bonded glass. Direct bonding removes the air gap behind the glass, which cuts reflections and keeps condensation out.

Batteries That Last a Shift or Swap Mid-Shift

A rated battery life is measured under light use. A crew running cellular, GPS and a bright screen all day gets less. Plan on the shift, not the rating.

  • ✔ Hot-swap batteries change out while the tablet stays on, so the open work order and the login survive the swap.
  • ✔ Extended batteries add hours at the cost of weight; the right choice for a 12 hour shift away from a vehicle.
  • ✔ Dock charging keeps a vehicle-mounted tablet topped up; a multi-bay charger at the depot does the same for a crew's spares.
  • ✔ Battery replacement is part of the life plan. Batteries wear out before the tablet does, and swappable packs make that a part order instead of a service ticket.

Android or Windows on a Rugged Tablet

Both operating systems run on rugged hardware. The choice follows the software the crew uses and the way IT manages devices.

Android Rugged TabletsWindows Rugged Tablets

Ports, Docks and Vehicle Mounting

Rugged tablets keep the ports consumer tablets dropped, and the docks are what make them work in a vehicle. Both are model-specific.

  • ✔ Ports. Fully rugged models offer serial, Ethernet, USB-A and USB-C behind sealed doors, plus configurable options such as a barcode reader or a second battery.
  • ✔ Vehicle docks lock the tablet in, charge it from the vehicle and pass external antenna connections through to the unit on models that support it.
  • ✔ Desk cradles and keyboard docks turn the same tablet into a workstation at the depot.
  • ✔ Mounting arms position the dock in the cab; the arm is chosen for the vehicle, the dock for the tablet.
  • ✔ One model, one dock. A dock fits one tablet model or family. A tablet refresh can mean a dock refresh across the fleet, which is why standardizing on a model pays.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fully rugged or semi-rugged for a utility or public works crew?

Fully rugged for crews that carry the tablet in weather, drop it on concrete or leave it on a truck bed. Semi-rugged for a device that lives in a cab dock and comes out at the site. Over a 3 to 5 year run the fully rugged unit usually costs less per year because fewer are replaced.

What does MIL-STD-810H certify on a tablet?

MIL-STD-810H is a set of test methods for drop, vibration, temperature, humidity, altitude, sand and dust, and more. The manufacturer picks which methods to run and reports the results, so the badge means the tablet passed the tests listed on its product page, not every test in the standard.

Is IP65 enough, or does the crew need IP67?

IP65 covers rain, splash and being hosed down, which is most outdoor and vehicle work. IP67 adds survival of a drop into standing water for 30 minutes. Crews working around water, marine sites or flooded areas should hold out for IP67 or IP68.

How bright does the screen need to be for outdoor work?

Plan on 800 nits or more for a tablet read in direct sun or on a dashboard, with 1,000 nits and above for the brightest conditions. Consumer tablets at 400 to 500 nits wash out outdoors.

Can a rugged tablet be used with gloves or in the rain?

Yes. Rugged models carry glove-touch and wet-touch modes that register a gloved finger and ignore water on the glass. Many also ship with an active pen for signatures and markups in the field.

What is a hot-swap battery and when is it worth it?

A hot-swap battery can be removed and replaced while the tablet stays powered on, so the user keeps the login and the open work order. It is worth it for shifts longer than the battery and for crews working away from a vehicle dock.

Android or Windows for a rugged tablet fleet?

Choose the operating system that runs the crew's software. Android suits dispatch, inspection and work order apps and gives lighter, longer-running units. Windows suits organizations standardized on Windows applications and anyone who needs a full desktop or a keyboard dock.

Do rugged tablets fit standard vehicle docks?

No. Docks are built for one tablet model or family. The product page lists the docks and mounting kits made for each tablet, and Paygasus checks dock fit against the order before it ships.

Does a rugged tablet replace a laptop?

A 12 inch Windows rugged tablet with a keyboard dock can. It runs the same applications and joins the same management as a laptop, with a tablet's sealed case and touch screen. Crews that only run field apps are better served by a lighter 8 or 10 inch unit.

Which rugged tablets have cellular?

Models with a SIM slot are sold with the cellular option on the product page. Carrier and band details for each cellular model are listed on the 5G Tablets pages.
